Data Center Regulation?

Coming Soon to a Data Center near you, Regulation.

This is an entry from the blog of Mike Manos, a former general manager of Microsoft's data center divison. He writes about the United Kingdom's proposed CRC cap and trade scheme, and its effect on data designs and operations, and the potential of this act coming to fruition in the U.S.

The goal of the Carbon Reduction Commitment (CRC) is to cut carbon emissions for large energy-consuming companies by imposing a mandatory carbon emission cap. The Obama Administration will be obeserving this scheme's performance, in hopes of implementing similar regulations here in the U.S.

For those unfamiliar, the data center is the heart-and-soul of IT operations in almost any mid-large size company (housing computers / servers / network equipment). As such, the vast power requirements of the data centers count for a large percantage of a company's total consumption. In short. . .this is no overnight project, and could be a huge obstacle for corporations to roll out.
